HUMAN SERVICES COUNSELOR III

The Healthy Start program is a care coordination program for pregnant women and infants up to age 3. Services are provided in the client's home or in OB provider offices throughout Pinellas County. This position is at the Mid County Health Center in Largo, Florida.

This Counselor position reports directly to the Human Services Program Supervisor II for the Mid County Healthy Start team. The Human Services Counselor III position provides professional Healthy Start Care Coordination services that link pregnant women and infants with the supports and services that complement, supplement, and assure continued participation in prenatal and infant health care.

Pregnant women complete a Healthy Start screening form at their first prenatal care program and are referred to Healthy Start as needed. Infants are also screened at birth at all local hospitals and are referred as needed.

Responsibilities include

  • Establish a trusting relationship with culturally diverse families by initiating and maintaining regular client contact.
  • Provide Case Management to pregnant women and infants referred to the Healthy Start Program.
  • Provide face to face contact with clients either in the OB provider's office or in the client's residence.
  • Provide Parenting Education one on one with clients.
  • Provide Breastfeeding Education and Tobacco Cessation Education to individual clients.
  • Document all client contact information in the web based computer application known as the Well Family System
  • Provide referrals to community resources to supplement Healthy Start services.

KSA's

  • Experience in Counseling techniques and strategies
  • Experience working with pregnant women and children.
  • Problem solving skills related to advancing client self-sufficiency.
  • Ability to work well with others as a team.
  • Computer skills: competency and experience.
  • Experience in interviewing and assessing to determine the needs of the client.
  • Knowledge of community resources.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Work or related field.
  • Florida Drivers' License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • At least two years of experience working with pregnant women and children.
  • At least two years of experience interviewing and assessing clients.
  • Two years of home visiting experience is highly desirable.
