The primary purpose of the job is to ensure the appropriateness and integrity of financial accounting & reporting for the Bank, with a focus on financial instruments, as delegated by Director, Accounting Policy Implementation. This involves research and analysis of accounting issues through to recommended solutions, particularly in response to ongoing changes in IFRS and for complex and specialized non-routine transactions, as well as the implementation of the Bank's accounting policies & procedures in a practical and well controlled manner.

  • Maintain and develop technical knowledge of existing and proposed accounting, financial reporting & disclosure requirements relevant to the Bank, with a focus on financial instruments. This will require staying abreast of proposed changes to IFRS accounting standards, as well as new financial reporting & disclosure required by regulatory bodies (eg, OSFI, Financial Stability Board).
  • Under the direction of the Director, implement the Bank's accounting policies & procedures related to financial instruments. This will involve designing and implementing new financial reporting processes and controls in order to operationalize and ensure compliance with accounting policies, as well as the accuracy & completeness of financial disclosure requirements. Such analysis may require the preparation of detailed accounting entries and instructions to operating units in order to process complex transactions correctly and to advise Front Office/Product Control staff on the accounting impact of proposed transactions. It may also involve advising executives of proposed changes and the impact on the all-Bank results.
  • Provide a knowledgeable point of contact on accounting issues for other team members in Accounting Policy & Procedure Implementation and Global Finance - Accounting Policies and Procedures, and to provide accounting guidance to the Front Office and Back Office relative to specific business transactions, with a focus on financial instruments.
  • Review ongoing financial accounting & reporting of financial instruments to assess accuracy and integrity, particularly as it relates to complex and non-routine transactions. This will involve reviewing specific non-routine transactions, products and processes to ensure financial reporting is in accordance with appropriate policies.

Qualifications Required:

  • Accredited accounting professional, preferably a Chartered Professional Accountant, Chartered Accountant, with experience in the financial services industry and exposure to complex accounting issues.
  • Thorough, in-depth knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) is required.
  • Ability to identify, analyze and research the accounting issues related to complex business transactions through to recommended solutions, producing a near final product subject to final review by the Director/VP and in some cases, approval by Accounting Policy & Procedures.
  • Experience managing a number of projects/initiatives/reviews at any given time. This will often involve coordinating resources across various areas of the Bank in order to get the pertinent information to provide the proper accounting recommendations in a timely manner.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required in order to document and explain complex products and transactions, as well as the analysis and rationale required to support accounting conclusions and recommendations.
